Artist and worship leader Chris Tomlin tells the story behind “At The Cross (Love Ran Red),” and how it gave him a new perspective on the Gospel—the greatest story ever told.

The Gospel is the story of Jesus giving up of His life for ours on a cross, making payment for all the wrong things we have done. Chris Tomlin’s song describes what happened to Jesus and what happened to our sin: “At the cross…where [Jesus’] love ran red, and my sin washed white…”

“You think you’ve sung every way to sing about the cross,” says Chris Tomlin, “And then a line like that comes along and you just see it all brand new again.”

At the cross, at the cross
I surrender My life,
I owe all to you, I owe all to you.
Where your love ran red
And my sin washed white
I’m in awe of you, I’m in awe of you, Jesus.

We believe the Gospel is truly the greatest story ever told. Jesus’ blood took away our sin. It’s completely gone because of the cross—because of the Gospel. But the cross isn’t the end of the story; Jesus died, but He didn’t stay dead. He came back to life, proving He is God and taking our sin away for good. It leaves us in awe.

Chris Tomlin travels all over the world singing about the cross and the Gospel in songs like “Jesus Loves Me” and “Good Good Father.” Catch him on tour and at the Passion Conference.
