History is filled with man’s efforts to build some kind of Heaven on Earth. Even Communism was supposed to create a “worker’s paradise,” where greed would be a thing of the past, and people would prosper equally. Of course, it has not worked that way.
None of man’s efforts work out the way he intends, but it doesn’t stop him from trying. Why? Because we all have a longing in our hearts for something more, something perfect. I submit to you that we are all homesick for the Garden of Eden.
I realize we’ve never walked in its lush, green grass or tasted its exquisite fruit, but we long for it. God put that longing in our hearts so we would seek Him because He knows the plan He has for His followers, and it is Eden 2.0.
God is Making All Things New
According to Revelation 21, there will be a New Heaven and a New Earth one day. So, if there will be a New Heaven and a New Earth, will the current Heaven and Earth be destroyed?
Some Bible students read II Peter 3 and see words — such as fire, pass away, burned up and dissolved — and reason the Earth will catch fire, pass away, be burned up and dissolved. Case closed, right?
The original Greek suggests anything that binds Heaven and Earth will be dissolved. What currently binds Heaven and Earth? According to Genesis 3, the curse that followed the fall of Adam and Eve not only binds mankind, but all of creation as well.
But there will come a day when the current corruption of Earth will be taken away. God will uncover, not destroy. He will purify, not burn up. The present Earth will be renovated and refreshed, but it will still be home.
The Curse Will Be Reversed
The Genesis flood didn’t annihilate the Earth. It did, however, cleanse it. Likewise, the Earth will not be destroyed but rather reset to Eden-like conditions. It is the ultimate extreme makeover!
There is coming a day when the curse will be reversed, and the longing of our hearts for a perfect, Eden-like existence will be reality. There will be no more thorns, no more thistles and no more tombstones. According to Ephesians 1:10 and Colossians 1:20, God is going to gather all things in Heaven and on Earth together under one head, Jesus. Heaven and Earth will be united into one new universe ruled by Jesus, Himself. If that doesn’t crank your old Ford truck, then your battery may be dead!
Some believers are disappointed to find out we will live here instead of in the great by-and-by, but I’m excited. As I walked out tonight and saw the stars, I was overwhelmed and had to stop and thank God for their beauty. If it’s this stunning now, what will it be like when all the bad is burned away and just the perfect remains?
I love this place. I don’t love the spiritual systems of this world the enemy has set up, but I do love this Earth we call home. I hope you feel the same way, and I hope you know the Way.
His name is Jesus.
