Tim’s Place in Albuquerque, New Mexico is more than a restaurant serving eggs, bacon, sandwiches, and beverages. Tim’s Place is a source of inspiration for many.
Owned and operated by Tim Harris and his brother, Tim’s Place has taken customer service to the next level. Tim, who has Down syndrome, gives customers free hugs with their meal.
There are many things that stand out about Tim’s Place. It is supposedly the only restaurant owned by a person with Down syndrome in the United States. We hear the food is pretty good. And of course, how many restaurants give away free hugs? But the most amazing thing of all in Tim’s Place is Tim himself.
Tim, 28, chose not to be limited by struggles. Tim was homecoming king at his high school, is a special olympics gold medalist, a college graduate, soon to have his own reality TV show, and is fulfilling his life long dream. As a teenager, Tim always wanted to own a restaurant. With the support of his family and community, that dream became a reality.
When asked about why he wanted to started a restaurant, Tim profoundly responded, “I have a dream to inspire other people to reach for the stars. If I can do it, you can too.”
There is something powerful about Tim’s story. When faced with seemingly insurmountable obstacles, we are often tempted to quit. To give up. But Tim’s story is an encouragement to us that there is always hope. What dreams have you given up on too quickly? What obstacles are keeping you from pressing forward?
If you’re ever in Albuquerque, stop in at Tim’s Place. Maybe a free hug will remind you not to give up.
